10 Great Non-Disney Animated Movies You Can Watch with Your Family

The phrase "Disney movie" is often used interchangeably with "animated film", to the point where it almost seems like Walt & Co. were the only game in town. In fact, a number of the most undeniably excellent late-20th-century animations were not Disney fare.

 

1. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002)

A tale which follows the adventures of a wild and rambunctious mustang stallion. Encountering man for the first time, Spirit defies being broken, even as he develops a remarkable friendship with a young Lakota brave named Little Creek. The young stallion also finds love with a beautiful paint mare named Rain on his way to becoming one of the greatest unsung heroes of the Old West.

 

2. The Rugrats Movie (1998)

Tommy faces responsiblity when Dil, his new baby brother is born. As with all newborns, the child becomes a bane to Tommy and the rest of his gang. Even Phil and Lil don't like them. So they decide to return Dil to where he came from, the hospital. But they get lost along the way, REALLY lost, and get into even more trouble with a circus. Can they find their way home and can Tommy and Dil just get along?

 

3. The Land Before Time (1988)

An orphaned brontosaurus named Littlefoot sets off in search of the legendary Great Valley. A land of lush vegetation where the dinosaurs can thrive and live in peace. Along the way he meets four other young dinosaurs, each one a different species, and they encounter several obstacles as they learn to work together in order to survive.

 

4. The Pagemaster (1994)

A storm forces frightened Richard Tyler (Macaulay Culkin) inside a nearby library for shelter. Mr. Dewey (Christopher Lloyd), the librarian, sees that Richard needs an adventure and tries to give the boy a book, but all Richard wants is a phone. Before he can call his parents (Ed Begley Jr., Mel Harris), Richard slips on the floor, hits his head and passes out. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a fantasy land populated by famous literary characters.

 

5. Jetsons: The Movie (1990)

George Jetson gets a job offer: he can run his own sprocket factory. However, the factory is on some distant planet and he's not the first employee from Spacely Sprockets inc. to be sent to the factory. It turns out that the plant is sabotaged because it affects the caves underneath. How does George satisfy his boss and stops the plant from destroying the land of the creatures living below the factory?

 

6. The Pebble and the Penguin (1995)

He must present his special pebble to her before the pebble festival is over, or lose his chance forever. He just manages to pluck up the nerve, when the evil Drake knocks him off the ice, and Hubie is swept away. Picked up and caged by a ship, he meets the streetwise Rocko, whose only wishes are to live in sunny climates and learn to fly. Together they escape, and Hubie convinces Rocko to help him find Antarctica. When they reach the home ice, Hubie must defeat his worst enemy, and Rocko must face up to the reality of his dream of flying.

 

7. Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (2000)

There's Tommy the brave one, Chuckie the timid one, Phil and Lil the odd couple, Dil, and spoiled brat Angelica. This time they're wreaking havoc in Paris, France, where Tommy's dad Stu is summoned after yet another one of his inventions took a dump. Chuckie's Pop, Chas, is looking to date again, it's been years since the passing of his previous wife, also a new mommy for Chuckie would be in order.

 

8. The Swan Princess (1994)

As children, Princess Odette and Prince Derek hated the thought that someday they would be forced to marry. Yet, as they grew up, their looks as well as their feelings for each other changed. However, in one night everything goes wrong, Derek makes an insulting remark, and Odette vanishes. With everyone believing her dead, Derek is the only one who will not give up hope, using what little clues he has to track down whatever took the princess. Meanwhile, in a secluded ruin, an enchanter with an eye for Odette's kingdom has turned the beautiful maiden into a swan. She may only remain in her human form when moonlight touches the lake she's imprisoned beside. As the two search for one another, they learn what it takes to make a vow of love that can last for eternity.

 

9. Thumbelina (1994)

A girl no bigger than her mother's thumb feels all alone in the world knowing she is the only person her size. Her wish for a companion at last comes true when the prince of the fairy's arrives at her window sill. However, the naive Thumbelina's life goes downward from there when a toad kidnaps her. While she tries to find a way home, she begins to grow up and learns about hope with the help of the friends she always wanted.

 

10. All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989)

When a casino owning dog named Charlie is murdered by his rival Carface, he finds himself in Heaven basically by default since all dogs go to heaven. However, since he wants to get back at his killer, he cons his way back to the living with the warning that doing that damns him to Hell. Once back, he teams with his old partner, Itchy to prep his retaliation. He also stumbles on to an orphan girl who can talk to the animals, thus allowing him to get the inside info on the races to ensure his wins to finance his plans. However, all the while, he is still haunted by nightmares on what's waiting for him on the other side unless he can prove that he is worthy of Heaven again.
